A How-To Guide For Checking Your Roof

On May 8, 2024 by swllwheatin Standard

Though roof inspections are an important part of preventative maintenance routines, people commonly forget to check their roofing system regularly. You should try your best to commit to a roofing inspection each spring and fall to avoid or address any maintenance issues.

The NRCA suggests that homeowners hire professional roofing contractors for this particular task. Despite this suggestion, the NRCA acknowledges that many people prefer a do-it-yourself inspection instead of paying for one. If the DIY route is your preference, consider these crucial tips for a safe and thorough inspection.

When you clean out gutters and inspect your roof, keep the following ladder safety guidelines in mind:

  • Double-check that the ladder is standing on solid, even ground.
  • Use the appropriate materials to secure the top of your ladder. This reduces the risk of slipping.
  • Before using your ladder, inspect it thoroughly for any sort of damage.
  • Extending your ladder no less than three feet past the gutter. Try angling it one foot away from the house per every four feet of height.
  • Use both of your hands when using your ladder.

Once you are safely on your ladder, keep an eye out for:

  • Shingles that show signs of damage like curling, blistering, and buckling. This may indicate the need to replace shingles.
  • Loose material and damage near the chimney, pipes, and other areas.
  • High amounts of shingle residue in your gutters. Shingle granules are weight weigh down shingles and protect them.

Before using the services of a roofing contractor, do some research:

  • Determine the residential address for the contracting business as well as their phone number. You also need their tax identification number (TIN).
  • Review references and ratings from previous customers.
  • Inquire about their liability insurance and workers comp insurance.**
  • Inquire about material and service guarantees or warranties.

**Please note that the United States workers’ comp laws vary in each state. Look up your local laws to see what the workers’ comp insurance regulations are.

If you determine there is a roofing problem or see troubling signs, use the services of a roofing contractor who will provide you with high-quality service.
